Alina Moroz, Behace.net

Updating Library Components

When Library Components (Symbols, Text Styles or Layer Styles) you use in your document get updated, you’ll see a Library Updates Available badge in the corner of Sketch’s window. Clicking on this will bring up a Component updates dialog.

Select a Component to see what’s changed and check the checkbox if you want to update it in your document. If you don’t want to update a specific Component, uncheck it. When you’re done, click Update Components.

To stop a Symbol from updating double-click any instance of it in your document and click Unlink from Library. This will create a local Symbol on your Symbols page instead.

Tip: For information how to unlink Text and Layer Styles, take a look at .

  • Paperkit.net —

  • тушь;
  • акварель;
  • карандаши акварельные;
  • уголь;
  • чернила обычные и цветные;

Library Styles

Along with Symbols you can share and sync Text and Layer Styles using Libraries. They’ll appear in the Components Panel and in the Components popover under Appearance in the Inspector. You can also access Text and Layer Styles via the Insert menu, and Like Symbols, Library Styles have a link icon next to their group name to indicate they’re part of Library.

How to Edit Library Styles

If you’re using a Library Style (Layer Styles or Text Styles) in your document and want to edit a Layer that uses it, you’ll have a few options to choose from in the Appearance panel in the Inspector:

  • Before you make any edits, you can choose to Create a new local Style from the currently selected Style. This will unlink the style from the Library and create a new local Style in your document.
  • Alternatively, you can choose to Detach the Style from its master, to unlink it from the Library but not create a new local Style.
  • If you make edits to a Library Style, you can choose Create New Style and Replace to unlink it from the Library, create a new local Style and apply those changes to all layers in your document with that Style applied. Alternatively you can choose Reset Style to revert your changes.
  • As long as the Style is not part of a Third Party Library, you can also choose Edit Style in Library to open the Library document that this style belongs to.

Note: Editing a Style in the original Library document will update that Style for anyone using that Library.

How to Create Library Presets

As well as Symbols, Text and Layer Styles, you can use Libraries to sync and share solid, gradient or image fill presets. To create a Library Preset for a color, for example, select a color in the fill popover of your Library document and add it as a preset under Document Colors.

Now, when you’re working in a document that uses that Library, click on the title above the presets in the fill popover and select the Library’s name to view all of the available Library Presets.

Exporting Assets

As well as being able to inspect documents on Cloud, anyone with access to a document can now download assets that are set as exportable. Asset exports happen on request and only for the person that requests them.

How to export individual assets

Head to any Artboard within your document on Cloud and select the Inspector tab in the right sidebar. From there, click on any layer on the Artboard to bring up its Inspector attributes.

If that layer has had export options set for it in the original Sketch document, you’ll see those export options at the bottom of the sidebar.

Click on the download button next to any of the export options to download the layer in that format. If you select a format that has multiple sizes or resolutions, your download will include every size or resolution for that format.

In this example, the PNG export is available at 1x and 2x resolution, so these appear together and download in a ZIP file.

To download the asset you’ve selected in all formats, sizes and resolutions, click the download button next to All Formats.

Note: If you select a layer and expect to see export options but Cloud Inspector does not show you any, it might be that the exportable layer is hidden behind another layer or within a group. Try Control+clicking on the layer to view the selection menu and look for a layer with the Slice (knife) icon. This indicates a layer has export options.

How to export all assets

To export all of the assets in a Cloud document, navigate to its overview page and click on the Export Assets button at the bottom of the right sidebar. You’ll get the option to download the final files in ZIP format.

There may be a short wait for the assets to process before you can download them, depending on their size.

Depending on the total size of the assets you’re exporting, you may be able to download your assets straight away, or you may see a notification that explains the export is processing and that we’ll notify you once it’s complete.

How to make sure you can export assets from Cloud

In order to export and download assets from Cloud, you’ll need to have done the following in the Mac app first:

  • or;

If none of the layers, Artboards or groups in your Sketch document are exportable, or it doesn’t contain any slices, you won’t be able to use the Export Assets feature for that document in Cloud. If the Export Assets button in Cloud is greyed out or individual assets don’t show any export options, it’s because there aren’t any layers or Artboards set as exportable for it.

Gradients

To apply a gradient fill to a layer, click the color button under the Fills section of the Inspector, then choose either the linear, radial or angular gradient buttons at the top of the popover.

How to Create Linear Gradients

With a linear gradient, Sketch adds a line with two points to your layer.

To change a color on your gradient, click on either point and select a color using the color popover in the inspector. To add another color to your gradient, click anywhere on the gradient line to add a new point.

Drag the color points to change the look of your gradient. Or select a point and press backspace to delete it.

How to Create Radial Gradients

Editing radial gradients is similar to editing except that one of the points now sets the middle of the effect and its opposite point sets where the effect ends. By dragging the non-color point, you can control the size of the effect.

How to Create Angular Gradients

Angular Gradients place any color points you create on a circle (based on the maximum height or width of a layer). You can drag the points to adjust their position or click on the circle to add new points.

How to Use the Gradient Bar

Along with the gradient points on your layers, you can use the gradient bar in the color popover to adjust and control your gradient. It works in exactly the same way. Click a point to change its color and drag it to move it, click anywhere on the bar to add a new color, or select a point and press backspace to remove it.

How to Adjust Gradient Points with Shortcuts

You can use the following shortcuts to adjust your gradient:

19 Position a new color point along the gradient bar (e.g. 3 = 30% along.
= Positions a gradient point equally between two other points.
Tab Switch between color point.
or Adjust the color point position incremenetally.
+ or Adjust the color point position in larger increments.

The Inspector

In the Inspector, you’ll find settings for any layers you’ve selected, or controls for the tool you’re using. The Inspector hides and shows these controls and settings based on what you have selected or what you’re doing.

  1. Alignment Options. These become active when you select two or more layers.
  2. Layer Properties. These let you change the position, size and rotation of layers, as well as flip them.
  3. Text Fields. You can change values in text fields in the Inspector in a few ways. Hovering over them will show up and down arrows to change a value. You can also click and drag left and right on the labels by each field to change their values. Holding while clicking will change it by ten times as much, and will change it by a tenth.
  4. Resizing Constraints. You’ll see these controls if you’ve selected a layer within a group or Artboard. .
  5. Styling. The Styling tools let you control how your layers look. To add a new Style, click the add button next to the section title for the style you want to use. When you’ve added styles, you can hide them by deselecting the checkbox next to them. To remove a style altogether, deselect its checkbox and click the trash icon that appears. Read more about styling.
  6. Exporting. Read more about exporting.

Resizing constraints

The resizing constraints in the Inspector let you choose how layers behave when you resize the Artboard, group or symbol they’re a part of.

Tip: By default, Sketch will resize layers within a group or symbol relative to their parent, including any padding.

If you want a layer to resize relative to the Artboard it’s a part of, select the Artboard itself and check Adjust content on resize in the Inspector.

To set resizing constraints, select a layer within an Artboard, group or symbol to show the resizing constraints controls in the Inspector.

The controls on the right let you set which edges of a parent your layer will pin to, while the controls in the middle let you set whether your layer’s height and width should stretch or stay at a fixed size. On the right, there’s a preview to show how the controls you select affect your layer’s behaviour.

Fix Size

The Fix Size constraints keep a layer’s height or width (or overall dimensions) the same, no matter how its parent is resized.

This is useful, for example, if you have a menu bar in an interface that you want to keep the same height, no matter how tall the artboard it’s in becomes.

In this example, the menu symbol height is fixed and its width is not. It will resize horizontally for larger device sizes, but not stretch vetically.

Pin to Edge

Pin to Edge fixes the distance between a layer and a particular set of edges or corners of its parent, no matter how the parent is resized.

This is useful, for example, if you have a floating action button within an interface, pinning this to the top and left edges will make sure it stays the same distance from the corner of an artboard.

In this example, the button has a fixed height and width and is pinned to the top-left edge. It wont resize resize and its position will stay fixed when its parent container resizes.

The Components Panel

The Components Panel is a quick and easy way to search, find and manage all the Symbols, Layer Styles and Text Styles in your document and any Libraries you have enabled.

How to Access the Components Panel

To access the Components Panel click on Components at the top of the Layer List (you can also use Ctrl+1 and Ctrl+2 to toggle between the Components Panel and Layer list, respectively). You’ll have the option to view “All” components or just components belonging to your document or a particular Library.

The three icons below this list allow you to view Symbols, Text Styles and Layer Styles.

How to Search the Components Panel

You can use the search bar at the top of the panel to filter your selection. Clicking on any Component reveals a large preview at the bottom of the panel, so it’s easy to distinguish between Symbols or styles with minor differences.

When you’ve found the Symbol or style you want to use, you can drag and drop that component straight onto your Canvas to start working with it.

Tip: Components with long names will be truncated in the Components Panel. Hover over any truncated Component name to see it in full in a tooltip.

Organizing Components

The Components Panel makes it easy to organize your Libraries. Double click on any Component to rename it, and if you want to organize them into folders — simply drag one on top of the other.

How to Expand and Collapse Groups

In both the Layer List and the Components Panel, you can quickly collapse all open groups by choosing View > Sidebar > Collapse All Groups. For more granular control, you can hold when you click on a disclosure arrow next to a group’s name to open and collapse all contents within that group (including sub-groups).

By default, all groups are expanded, but you can change this setting by choosing View > Sidebar and toggling the Automatically Expand Groups item. Note: This option only applies to items in the Layer List.

Presets

At the bottom of the color popover, you can store color, gradient or image fill presets for quick access and reuse within your document or as part of a library.

How to Add a Preset

To add a preset, select your color, gradient or image fill, choose whether you’d like to add it to your global (all documents) or document (this document only) presets, then click the + icon.

To rename your preset, make sure you’re viewing your presets in list view, control-click on it and choose Rename. You can also control-click and choose to move or copy your preset between the global or document locations.

You can drag presets to reorder them, or drag them completely out of the color popover to delete them (or control-click on them and choose Delete).

Finally, when you control-click a solid color preset, you can choose to copy its HEX, RGB, HSL, Objective-C or Swift code color values to the clipboard.

How to create Library Presets

When you save a document preset and make that document a Library, it’ll appear below the Global and Document items in the presets menu to anyone who’s added the Library.

Any presets that have been updated in a Library you’ve added will show a small dot to indicate when they’ve been updated.

Working with missing fonts

When you open a document that does not have fonts embedded, and you don’t have a font it uses installed on your Mac, you’ll see a Missing Fonts notification in the top-right of the document window.

You’ll still be able to see text layers that use any missing fonts in your document (because we show you a PDF preview instead), but you won’t be able to edit those text layers unless you change the font they use or replace that font in the Document Fonts sheet.

How to replace missing Fonts

Click on the Missing Fonts notification and, in the sheet that appears, choose the Replace Missing Font button next to any missing font you want to replace. From here, you’ll need to select a replacement font family and weight. When you’ve made your selection, choose Replace and then Done to finish. Text layers that use the missing fonts will now show your chosen replacement font instead.

Kalacheva School
